ABOUT

Hello,

I’d like to introduce you Japanese calligraphy and art on this website, which have long histories more than a thousand years. You can look at many artworks of Japanese calligraphy and drawings here.

The following is a brief story about Japanese calligraphy as a preliminary knowledge.
Japanese has 3 types of characters, called “Hiragana”, “Katakana”, “Kanji (almost same with Chinese characters)”. It is said that Japan imported characters from China around 5th-6th century. Now they are called Kanji in Japan.

Then around 8th century, Hiragana and Katakana was created, being transformed from Kanji (Chinese characters). As Hiragana and Katakana are phono-gramic, they enables us to express our colloquial sentences simply and conveniently. We have been writing the 3 kinds of characters with a brush traditionally since the time that the characters were created. Though now that pens and PCs are widely used to write them, many Japanese people still enjoy learning and writing calligraphy in the traditional style.

On the other hand, we have also been drawing paintings with a writing brush. There are many kinds of Japanese paintings. Water painting is one of the most popular ways that has been drawn by a lot of people, such as black and white water painting, colorful water painting, one with a short poem and etc.

I am going to add contents to this web site gradually. If you have any requests or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
I hope this web site gives you a good time.
